Get Visible in ChatGPT & Co.: The GEO Guide to AI Visibility

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity instead of googling themselves. Google, too, now answers many searches with AI Overviews. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) builds the AI visibility that gets your business mentioned and recommended in these answers. In this guide, we explain how it works and what you can do in concrete terms.

Key points at a glance

  • GEO means preparing content so that AI systems understand it, cite it and recommend your business.
  • AI answers rely on websites that are easy to find: without solid SEO, there is hardly any GEO.
  • What matters are direct answers, clear facts, structured data and mentions on trustworthy sites.
  • Allow AI crawlers access and provide an llms.txt file.
  • Measure regularly whether and how AI assistants mention your business.

1. What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the optimisation of content and websites so that generative AI systems use them as a source and mention your business in their answers. These systems include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, as well as AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search.

While classic SEO aims for rankings in a list of results, GEO is about becoming part of the answer. If someone asks “Which agency in Cyprus can help with Google Ads?”, the AI often names only two or three providers. If you do not appear there, you are not even considered.

2. Why is AI visibility becoming so important?

AI visibility is becoming important because search is changing: many questions are answered directly in the AI response, without users clicking on a website. AI assistants are used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide every week. In Germany, Google has been showing AI Overviews since 2025, and since October 2025 AI Mode in Google Search has also been available in German.

  • For informational queries, clicks on classic search results often fall because the answer is already shown at the top.
  • For purchase and provider queries, AI influences which brands make it onto the shortlist in the first place.
  • Visitors who arrive via an AI recommendation are often already well informed and ready to decide.

3. How do AI systems choose their sources?

AI systems combine their trained knowledge with a live web search and favour sources that answer a question clearly, credibly and in a well-structured way. The providers do not publish their exact methods. In practice, however, recurring patterns emerge:

FactorWhat it meansWhat you can do
FindabilityThe page ranks well on Google or BingBuild solid SEO foundations
Answer formatThe answer appears right at the start of a sectionAnswer every question in the first sentence
FactsConcrete figures, names, places and datesReplace generic marketing language with facts
AuthorityWho is writing, with what experience?Make the author, company and experience visible
MentionsOther websites mention your businessPresence on industry portals, in directories and in the press
ConsistencyThe same details everywhere on the webKeep name, address and services consistent

4. How do you write content that AI cites?

Content that AI cites is written so that every section fully answers a question on its own. AI systems break pages down into sections and pick out the relevant passages. A section that only makes sense in context is used less often.

  1. Phrase subheadings as real questions your customers ask.
  2. Answer the question in the first sentence below it, briefly and unambiguously.
  3. Then add details, examples and exceptions.
  4. Use tables for comparisons and lists for steps.
  5. Name your business, your location and your services explicitly instead of just writing “we”.
  6. Add an FAQ section with four to eight common questions.

An example: instead of “We are your competent partner for digital solutions”, write “Digital Targets is a digital marketing agency in Larnaka, Cyprus, founded in 2020, that supports businesses across Europe with SEO, Google Ads and AI visibility.” The second sentence contains facts that an AI can use.

5. What technical requirements does GEO have?

For GEO, AI crawlers must be allowed to read your site, and the content must be available as text in the HTML. Content that is only loaded via JavaScript or exists only in images is often not captured.

  • robots.txt: do not block AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot if you want to appear in their answers.
  • llms.txt: a simple text file in the root directory that summarises your business and your most important pages for AI systems.
  • Structured data: schema markup for organisation, services, articles and FAQ makes relationships machine-readable.
  • Loading time: fast, stable pages are crawled more reliably.
  • Bing: also register your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Several AI assistants use Bing data for their web search.

6. How do you strengthen your brand for AI answers?

AI systems mainly recommend businesses about which plenty of consistent and positive information can be found on the web. Your own website is just one source among many.

  • A complete Google Business Profile with recent reviews
  • Listings in relevant industry directories and specialist portals
  • Guest articles, interviews and press releases that mention your business
  • Active profiles on LinkedIn and other suitable networks
  • Customer reviews on independent platforms

Make sure your company name, address, phone number and service description are identical everywhere. Contradictory details make it hard for an AI to classify your business reliably.

7. How do you measure your AI visibility?

The easiest way to measure AI visibility is to regularly ask the same typical customer questions in several AI assistants and document the answers.

  1. Define 10 to 20 questions your customers ask, for example “Best SEO agency for online shops in Europe”.
  2. Ask these questions every month in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google Search.
  3. Note whether your business is mentioned, in what position and with what description.
  4. Check in Google Analytics 4 how many visitors come from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai or gemini.google.com.
  5. Compare the results with your main competitors.

AI answers vary from query to query. What counts is therefore the trend over several months, not a single result.

8. What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO ensures that your site is found; GEO ensures that your content is used in AI answers and your business is recommended. The two build on each other but do not replace each other.

SEOGEO
GoalGood rankings in search resultsMentions and recommendations in AI answers
Success visible asClicks and visitorsMentions, citations and brand awareness
Key leversTechnology, content, linksAnswer format, facts, mentions, structure
MeasurementGoogle Search Console, AnalyticsRegular test queries, referral visitors

We explain the fundamentals of classic optimisation in our SEO Basics.

9. Which content is cited most often?

The content cited most often is content that fully answers a specific question: guides, comparisons, definitions, step-by-step instructions and FAQs. Promotional copy without facts, by contrast, is rarely used.

FormatWhy it worksExample
Guides with questions as headingsEach section answers one question on its ownThis guide
Comparison tablesFacts are neatly structuredShop systems compared
DefinitionsClear one-sentence answers“What is GEO?”
Step sequencesCan be used directly as instructionsSet-up in seven steps
FAQShort, precise answers to real customer questionsFrequently asked questions at the end of the page

A practical example: an online shop for water filters wants to be recommended for the question “Which water filter is best for tap water?”. Instead of only optimising product pages, it adds a guide with a comparison table, clear test criteria, answers to common questions and details of its experience and origin. In doing so, it provides exactly the material from which AI systems assemble their answers.

Your website itself is the foundation for all of this. You can read what matters in structure and technology in our guide Create a Website. How to measure the effect is shown in our guide Tracking with GA4.

10. Which GEO mistakes should you avoid?

The most common GEO mistake is blocking AI crawlers without noticing, for example through a security setting or a plugin. Check your robots.txt and your firewall settings regularly.

  • Important information is only available in images, PDFs or videos
  • Pages start with long introductions instead of the answer
  • Company details differ between the website, profiles and directories
  • Content is outdated, for example old services or addresses

Checklist: is your website ready for AI search engines?

GEO quick check

  • AI crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt
  • An llms.txt file with a company profile and the most important pages is in place
  • At least half of the subheadings are questions
  • Every question is followed by a direct answer in the first sentence
  • Every important page has an FAQ section with structured data
  • Author, company and experience are recognisable on every page
  • Company details are consistent across the entire web

Frequently asked questions about GEO and AI visibility

Does GEO replace classic search engine optimisation?

No. AI systems draw on search results for up-to-date answers. Pages that rank well on Google and Bing therefore also have a better chance of appearing in AI answers. GEO adds answer format, facts and brand presence to SEO. If you plan both together, you become visible in classic search results and in AI answers.

Can I pay to be mentioned in ChatGPT?

Organic mentions in AI answers cannot be bought. Some providers are testing ad formats in AI answers, but these are then labelled as ads. Lasting visibility comes from good content, a strong brand and mentions on trustworthy websites. This work takes time, but it has a long-term effect without ongoing cost-per-click charges.

How long does it take for GEO to work?

Technical adjustments and new content can appear in AI answers with web search after just a few weeks. Building brand authority and mentions on other websites usually takes several months. That is why you should plan GEO as an ongoing task. Check regularly with fixed test questions how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your business.

What is an llms.txt file?

An llms.txt is a simple text file in the root directory of your website. It summarises your business in a few sentences and lists your most important pages with a short description. It is a voluntary proposal rather than an official standard, but it does no harm and is quick to create.

Should I rather block AI crawlers?

That depends on your business model. Some publishers block AI crawlers to protect their content. For service providers, shops and agencies, visibility in AI answers is usually more important, so in these cases we recommend allowing the crawlers. To do this, check your robots.txt and any active security plugins that may block crawlers without you noticing.

Is GEO worthwhile for small businesses too?

Yes, often especially so. For local or specialised questions, AI assistants frequently name only a few providers. With clear details about services, location and experience as well as good reviews, small businesses also have a good chance of being recommended. A complete Google Business Profile and consistent company data across the web are a good place to start.
