Google AI Overviews: What Businesses Need to Know

Google AI Overviews: What businesses need to know now – Digital Targets Blog

Google AI Overviews summarise the answer to a search query above the classic results and link to the sources they draw on. For businesses this means: visibility no longer belongs only to whoever ranks first, but to whoever is named as a source in that summary. In this article we explain how the feature works, what Google officially says about it and what you should do now.

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews have been available in Germany since 26 March 2025, AI Mode since 8 October 2025.
  • Google states that there are no additional technical requirements: your page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet.
  • Clear answers, good structure and trustworthy content increase the chance of being linked as a source.
  • With nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet you control what Google may show from your pages.
  • Google Search Console now offers dedicated performance reports for generative AI features.

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are summaries generated by Google that appear above the search results and point to the sources they use with links to websites. In the German Google interface the feature is called “Übersicht mit KI”, internationally “AI Overviews”. According to the official Google documentation on AI features, they only appear when Google’s systems consider them a useful addition to classic search. For simple navigational searches such as a brand name you will therefore usually see no overview, while for questions that need explaining you will often see one.

A typical AI Overview consists of a short answer, often broken into paragraphs or bullet points, with a set of linked sources next to it or below it. Whoever is named there gains attention, even if their own page is not right at the top of the classic results.

Since when have AI Overviews been available in Germany?

Since 26 March 2025, Google has shown AI Overviews in Germany, at launch for signed-in users aged 18 and over. Google describes this in its German blog post on the launch of AI Overviews. On the same day the feature also launched in Austria and Switzerland, among other countries.

Since 8 October 2025 AI Mode has also been available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as Google announces in its post on the launch of AI Mode in the DACH region. For businesses targeting German-speaking customers, both features are no longer a future topic but part of everyday search.

How do AI Overviews and AI Mode differ?

Which feature appears depends on the entry point: AI Overviews sit in the normal results page, while AI Mode is a separate area for detailed questions and follow-ups. Google explains that both use a technique called “query fan-out”: a question is split into several related searches on subtopics whose results are then combined. As a result, pages can also appear as a source that do not rank highly for the original query itself.

What requirements must your website meet?

Google says it is enough that your page is indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet; no special optimisation or files are needed. The Google documentation “AI features and your website” states explicitly that there are no additional technical requirements. There is, however, no guarantee of being included as a source.

In practice this means: gaps in your SEO basics are also gaps for AI Overviews. Google lists these points, among others:

  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and by your host or CDN
  • Make content findable through internal links
  • Provide important content as text, not only in images
  • Offer a good page experience
  • Keep structured data in line with the visible text
  • Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile up to date

Our guide SEO Basics gives a compact introduction to these fundamentals.

How do you get named as a source in AI Overviews?

Good chances go to pages that answer a question clearly, are well structured and visibly come from knowledgeable authors with evidence for their claims. There is no fixed switch, but there are proven patterns. We apply these steps in our projects on AI visibility and GEO:

  1. Collect your customers’ questions: What do prospects ask before they buy? These become your headings.
  2. Answer first: Directly under each heading there is a short answer sentence that makes sense on its own.
  3. Prove rather than claim: Link figures, deadlines and legal points to the original source.
  4. Show author and freshness: Name, qualification and the date of the last update belong visibly on the page.
  5. Structure: Tables, lists and FAQs make content easier to grasp for people and machines.

We explain the approach in detail in our guide Get Visible in ChatGPT & Co. You can test how well your own page is already prepared with our free GEO Score Check. For WordPress websites there is also our free plugin GEO Score, which rates every page directly in the editor.

How do AI Overviews affect your clicks?

Click numbers can shift because users get simple answers in the overview itself; in return, pages linked as a source gain visibility. In its documentation on AI features, Google itself states that clicks from AI Overviews are of higher quality, meaning users are more likely to spend more time on the site.

For your planning this means: pure definition questions will bring visibility rather than visits. Content with real added value, such as comparisons, calculators, checklists or advice, remains a reason to click.

Example: A trades business has so far answered “How much does a bathroom renovation cost?” on its website only in one long block of text. After the revision there is a short answer sentence under the question, followed by a table of the cost factors and an FAQ. The page now provides exactly the building blocks an AI Overview can cite, and at the same time offers a reason to click: requesting an individual quote.

How do you measure AI Overviews in Search Console?

Google counts data from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Search Console performance report under the “Web” search type and also offers dedicated reports for generative AI features. Google describes the assignment to the “Web” search type in its documentation on AI features. Google introduced the separate performance reports in June 2026 on the Search Central Blog; according to Search Console Help they have been available to all websites worldwide since 31 August 2026. They show the impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country and device.

Check there regularly which pages appear in AI features and compare the trend with your enquiries and sales. Our guide Tracking with GA4 helps with the analysis in combination with GA4.

Can you exclude content from AI Overviews?

Yes, with the familiar snippet controls nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex you limit what Google shows from your pages, including in AI features. Google confirms this in its documentation on AI features; the individual settings are described in the Google guide to robots meta tags. The “Google-Extended” setting, by contrast, does not affect Google Search, as Google points out.

Bear in mind: restricting snippets heavily usually also costs visibility in the classic results. It only makes sense for content you deliberately do not want summarised, such as paid content or sensitive passages.

What should businesses do now?

Our recommendation: review your most important pages for clear answers, clean technology and current company details, and measure the trend regularly. Start with the pages that bring the most enquiries today. Phrase headings as questions, put the answer first and back up claims with sources. Also keep your Google Business Profile up to date, as Google explicitly names Business Profiles as a data source.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn off AI Overviews in my own search?

Google currently offers no setting to switch AI Overviews off permanently (as of October 2026). You can, however, use the “Web” filter in Google Search to open a results list without an AI summary. For businesses it matters more how customers search: many see the overviews, so you should align your content with them rather than ignore them.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?

No. Google writes in its documentation on AI features that no new machine-readable files, no special AI text files and no special schema markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. What matters is indexing, snippet eligibility and good content. Such a file can still be useful for other AI systems, but for Google it is not a requirement.

Do I have to rank first to appear in an AI Overview?

Not necessarily. With the so-called query fan-out, Google splits questions into several related searches. As a result, pages can also appear as a source that are not at the top for the original query but answer a sub-question particularly well. A good position in classic search still helps, because it shows that Google considers your page relevant to the topic.

How can I tell whether my page appears in AI Overviews?

Most reliably through Google Search Console. Google counts data from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the performance report under the “Web” search type and, since 2026, also offers dedicated reports for generative AI features. In addition, you can enter your customers’ key questions in Google yourself and check which sources are named. Spot checks do not replace a regular analysis of the data, though.

Does this also apply to online shops?

Yes. AI Overviews also appear for product questions and comparisons, and Google’s documentation explicitly names Merchant Center as a data source you should keep up to date. For shops on WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Shopify, well-maintained product data, clear product descriptions and category pages that directly answer typical buying questions therefore pay off. This raises the chance of being named as a source or product.
