Social Media Strategy: How to Plan Social Media with Measurable Results
Many businesses post regularly on social networks without knowing whether it pays off. A social media strategy changes that: it defines whom you want to reach, where, with what content, and how you will measure success. In this guide, we show you step by step how to develop a strategy that genuinely contributes to your business.
Key points at a glance
- Start with a business goal, not with a channel.
- Focus on 2 to 3 networks where your target audience is genuinely active.
- An editorial calendar with fixed topics saves time and keeps you consistent.
- Organic reach is limited: social ads deliver predictable results.
- Measure enquiries and revenue, not just likes and followers.

1. What is a social media strategy?
A social media strategy is a written plan that sets out the goals, target audiences, channels, content, budget and key metrics for your activities on social networks. It links social media to the rest of your marketing objectives.
Without a strategy, posts are often created on the spur of the moment and without a common thread. That costs time and rarely delivers measurable results. With a strategy, everyone involved knows what is published, when and why.
2. What goals can you achieve with social media?
Typical social media goals are brand awareness, enquiries and sales, customer loyalty and attracting new employees. Choose one main goal and phrase it in a measurable way.
| Goal | Example of a measurable objective | Suitable metric |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Double reach in the target region within 6 months | Reach, impressions |
| Enquiries | 20 qualified enquiries per month via social media | Leads, cost per lead |
| Sales | Revenue from social ads with a positive return | Revenue, ROAS |
| Customer loyalty | More repeat purchases through an active community | Interactions, repeat purchase rate |
| Recruiting | Increase applications for open positions | Applications per month |
3. Who is your target audience?
Describe your target audience so precisely that you know what questions it has, what content interests it and when it is online. Short profiles of typical customers, known as personas, are helpful here.
- Who buys from you, and who else is involved in the decision?
- What problems and questions do these people have?
- Which networks and formats do they use, for example short videos or expert articles?
- What convinces them, and what puts them off?
4. Which networks suit your business?
Choose your networks based on where your target audience is active and what content you can deliver consistently over time. 2 well-managed channels are more effective than 5 half-hearted ones. The table compares the 6 most important networks.
| Network | Strengths | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Professional content, decision-makers, B2B | Service providers, B2B, recruiting | |
| Images, Reels, Stories, shopping | Brands, lifestyle, hospitality, shops | |
| Broad reach, groups, advertising | Local businesses, older audiences | |
| TikTok | Short videos, young audiences, high reach | Consumer goods, brands with personality |
| YouTube | Explainer videos, discoverable for the long term | Products that need explanation, tutorials |
| Inspiration and planning | Home, fashion, DIY, recipes |
5. What content works?
Successful social media content offers your target audience real value: it solves a problem, entertains or gives a genuine look behind the scenes. Pure advertising achieves hardly any organic reach.
- Knowledge: tips, tutorials and answers to frequent customer questions
- Insights: your team, how you work, how products are made
- Results: before and after, examples, customer testimonials with consent
- News: new products, events, offers
- Interaction: questions, polls, replies to comments
Define 3 to 5 fixed topic areas and plan your posts in an editorial calendar several weeks in advance. Content from your guides or blog can easily be turned into short posts and videos.
6. When is advertising on social networks worthwhile?
Social ads are worthwhile as soon as you need predictable results, because the organic reach of company pages is limited on most networks. Ads can be targeted very precisely by region, age, interests or profession. You can set up a campaign in 5 steps:
- Define the campaign goal, for example leads or sales
- Set up tracking, for instance with the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API
- Define target audiences, including remarketing to website visitors
- Test several creatives and ad copy variants
- Analyse the data after a few days and shift budget to the best-performing ads
As with any website measurement, tracking pixels in the EU generally require consent via the cookie banner; in Germany this follows from Section 25 TDDDG. Find out more in our guide Tracking with GA4.
7. How do you organise community management and customer service?
Reply to comments and messages promptly, ideally within one working day, and define who is responsible. Social networks are frequently used as a customer service channel.
- Clarify responsibilities and cover arrangements
- Prepare answers to frequent questions
- Set rules for handling criticism: factual, fast and solution-oriented
- Document and remove legally problematic comments
8. How do you measure success?
Measure social media success by the metrics that match your goal, and connect social media with your website data. Likes and followers are only an intermediate step.
| Level | Metrics |
|---|---|
| Reach | Impressions, reach, video views |
| Interaction | Comments, saves, shares, click-through rate |
| Business | Website visitors, leads, sales, cost per result |
Add UTM parameters to the links in your posts. This lets you see in Google Analytics which channels and posts generated enquiries.
9. How much time and budget should you plan for?
For one well-managed channel, realistically plan several hours per week for planning, creation, replies and analysis. Anyone who underestimates this gives up after a few weeks, which is exactly when results fail to materialise.
| Task | Frequency | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Plan topics | Monthly | Editorial calendar 4 weeks in advance |
| Create content | Weekly | Produce several posts in one session |
| Comments and messages | Daily | Block fixed times in your calendar |
| Manage advertising | Several times a week | Shift budgets to the best-performing ads |
| Analysis | Monthly | Compare metrics against your goals |
A practical example: a restaurant in Cyprus focuses on Instagram and its Google Business Profile. It publishes short videos from the kitchen 3 times a week, replies to every review and promotes events specifically to people in the local area. Reservations made via the website can then be attributed directly to the campaigns.
10. How do you connect social media with your website?
Guide interested people from social networks to the relevant pages of your website, where they can enquire or buy. Your website is the one place you fully control.
Link to guides, service pages and offers rather than just your homepage. You can read what matters for your website in our guide Create a website. We explain how social media and search engines work together in our SEO basics.
11. What role do video and creators play?
Short videos are the format with the highest reach on almost every network, and creators give brands access to audiences that would otherwise overlook advertising.
To get started, a smartphone with good lighting is enough. The first few seconds are crucial: they decide whether someone keeps watching. Show results or processes, or answer a frequent customer question. When working with creators, choose partners based on their fit with your target audience, not their follower count, and make sure the content is labelled as advertising, which in Germany is required by Section 5a(4) UWG.
When creators promote your products in return for commission, that is a form of affiliate marketing. Find out more in our Affiliate marketing basics.
12. How do you adapt the strategy?
Review your social media strategy every 3 months against the figures and adjust topics, formats and budget. Networks change their algorithms and formats regularly, and your target audience changes its behaviour.
Keep what demonstrably generates enquiries or sales, and replace formats that show no effect over several months. Only test new networks when your existing channels are performing well and you can sustain the additional workload. Document every change so you can later trace what had which effect.
Record the results of every review in writing, ideally in the same spreadsheet as your goals. That way you can see at a glance whether you are on track and justify decisions clearly within the team.

Frequently asked questions about social media strategy
How often should a business post?
Consistency matters more than volume. For many businesses, two to three posts per week and network is a realistic start. Choose a rhythm you can maintain over the long term, and adjust it based on your results. An editorial calendar planned four weeks in advance makes implementation noticeably easier.
Do I have to be on TikTok?
Only if your target audience is active there and you can produce short videos regularly. TikTok offers high reach but requires its own formats. For many B2B companies, LinkedIn and YouTube are the better channels. If in doubt, test TikTok for a few weeks with little effort before investing long term.
How much does advertising on Instagram or Facebook cost?
You set the budget yourself, and you can run tests even with small daily budgets. The cost per result depends on the target audience, competition, season and the quality of your ads. That is why you should measure the cost per enquiry or sale. Test several creatives and audiences in parallel and only increase the budget for the best ones.
Can I outsource social media completely?
Strategy, advertising and production can easily be outsourced. However, genuine insights, everyday photos and quick answers to questions work best with support from within the company. A clear division of tasks with defined responsibilities has proven effective. A short weekly catch-up ensures that topics and approvals do not get stuck.
Does social media help with SEO and AI visibility?
Indirectly, yes. Posts on social networks are not a direct ranking factor on Google. However, they increase awareness of your brand and lead to mentions and searches for your name. This also strengthens your visibility in AI-generated answers. Also link your profiles from your website so that search engines can attribute them to your company.
How should I deal with negative comments?
Reply factually, quickly and publicly, and offer to resolve the matter via direct message if needed. Only delete criticism if it is offensive or unlawful. Handling criticism well often builds more trust than comments that are purely full of praise.
